An interesting paper looking at the relationship between stroke patients taking statins Vs those who weren’t and mortality….a data trawling effort, but interesting! Look at the Kaplan-Meier curves, particularly the potency associated set!
The Hb is dropping!!
Septic patients were assessed and resuscitated in fairly stringent ways in the ARISE trial. So it was only a matter of time before secondary analyses were performed. Below is one interesting one, looking at effect volume resuscitation had in this trial upon Hb values and whether there was a resultant link with morbidity and mortality…take a look.

A nice review article on this topic. There is also a bit of detail on the actual cellular theories behind it as well. Some are not what we thought.
Totally out of sync!
A fantastic article here, explaining why many patients will fail a CAM-ICU score from the outset! Really worth a read as this is topical at present….circadian desynchronisation is certainly something we will all be hearing more and more about.
Whiff the alcohol and stop the vomiting?!
An interesting one presented by journal feed regarding the effect of effectively aromatherapy with an alcowipe Vs ondansetron on patients presenting to the ED with nausea. It would be interesting to look at this in chemo patients and post op gynae patients as well IMHO.
Nasal high flow for pre oxygenation…better get your flows up!
Nice paper here, demonstrating the deleterious effect having nasal cannula under a bag and mask can be on FiO2 levels. Unless you whack up there flows!

This paper looks at how many scans should be done to pick up pneumothoraces before the user can ditch firing M-mode over the area to help confirmation.
There has been noise regarding the diaphragm!
A lot has been said lately regarding the assessment of the diaphragm and ‘weanability’ of our patients. This article fully supports the usage of small portable devices in rapid and fairly comparable assessment at the bed-space. A good one for the old Vscan then!

To FICE, or BSE, or EDEC??!
So which course do you do to further your echo skills?? There are a few emerging out there now. FICE takes us through basic and some medium difficulty aspects of critical care echo. E-FICE takes us a bit further and EDEC (European diploma) a TOE stage further as well. SO is there any point in doing BSE L1 then…we aren’t sure!
